Frequently Asked Questions
Route
What is PyrAscend?
PyrAscend is a free self-guided offroad motorcycle route concept through the Pyrenees. It combines GPX navigation, route information, offroad statistics and day-by-day route structure.
Is the route free?
Yes. The PyrAscend GPX route is intended to be available for free, including supporting route information through the website.
How long is the route?
The full route covers approximately 703.3 km across five riding stages, including around 301 km of offroad terrain.
Is this a guided tour?
No. PyrAscend is self-guided. Riders follow the GPX route independently and remain responsible for their own decisions, safety and preparation.
GPX and navigation
What do I need to ride the route?
You need a suitable motorcycle, protective riding gear, a GPX navigation setup, offline maps and basic tools or repair equipment.
Can I use the GPX on my phone?
Yes, if your phone has a reliable navigation app that supports GPX files. Riders should download offline maps and test the setup before starting the route.
Is the GPX always accurate?
No GPX route should be followed blindly. Conditions, signs, closures, weather and terrain damage can change. Riders must always judge the situation on the ground.
Difficulty
How difficult is the route?
The route is best described as intermediate adventure level, with several more technical sections. It is not hard enduro, but it is also not a simple road trip.
Do I need offroad experience?
Yes, basic offroad experience is strongly recommended. Riders should be comfortable with gravel, loose stones, climbs, descents and longer riding days
Is the route suitable for large adventure bikes?
Yes, if the rider has enough control, proper tires and a suitable setup. Heavier bikes make technical terrain more physically demanding.
Preparation
What motorcycle is suitable?
An adventure, dual-sport or offroad-capable touring motorcycle is recommended. The bike should be road legal, reliable and prepared for mixed terrain.
Do I need special tires?
Offroad-capable tires are strongly recommended. Pure road tires are not suitable for loose gravel, mud, rocks and mountain trails.
What gear should I bring?
Protective riding gear, offroad or adventure boots, gloves, weather layers, hydration, navigation equipment and basic repair tools are recommended.
Safety and responsibility
Who is responsible during the ride?
The rider is fully responsible for safety, navigation, legal compliance, motorcycle condition and route decisions.
What if a section is closed or unsafe?
Do not continue blindly. Respect signs, barriers, private land and local rules. Turn around and choose an alternative route if needed.
Can weather affect the route?
Yes. Rain, snow, mud, fallen trees, erosion or landslides can make sections harder or inaccessible.
Still preparing for the route?
Check the preparation page before riding and make sure your motorcycle, gear, navigation setup and documents are ready.
